# MCP tools

> The everyday editing tools your agent sees, and the guides that bring in the rest.

The connector lists the tools of everyday editing. AskEditor has about two
hundred more, grouped into guides: your agent asks for a guide when the work
needs it, so its tool list stays short and every new tool works without
reconnecting.

## Everyday tools

| Group | Tools | What they do |
| - | - | - |
| Projects | `list_workspaces`, `list_projects`, `create_editor_project`, `open_project`, `read_project`, `get_editor_url` | Find, make and open a project. `get_editor_url` gives the link to the editor; with `pane: true` it gives a one-time link that opens the editor beside the chat. |
| Timeline | `get_timeline`, `edit_timeline`, `add_timeline_clip`, `move_clip`, `trim_clip`, `split_clip`, `delete_clip`, `set_clip_timing` | Read the timeline and change it. `edit_timeline` makes several changes in one call. |
| Look and motion | `set_clip_transform`, `set_clip_animation`, `set_keyframes`, `add_keyframe`, `set_transition`, `set_canvas_aspect_ratio` | Position, size, animation, keyframes, transitions and the frame shape. |
| Text and markers | `add_text`, `set_text`, `add_marker`, `remove_marker` | Titles and text on the timeline, and markers. |
| Media | `list_media`, `search_media`, `get_asset_metadata`, `get_clip_transcript` | Your media library, stock media, a clip's file details, and what a clip says with its times. |
| Motion graphics | `list_assets`, `write_asset` | The project's motion graphics, and new ones your agent writes. The editor shows them live and the export draws them. |
| Bringing files in | `create_upload`, `complete_upload`, `import_media_from_url` | Upload a file from your machine, or bring one in from a web address. |
| Looking | `watch_edit`, `watch_clip` | The edit, or a clip, returned as pictures, as it will export. |
| Export | `set_export_settings`, `export_video`, `get_export` | Render the film and get its download link. |
| Credits | `wait_for_credits` | Wait while you add credits for a call that needs more than your balance. |

## Guides and the rest

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `list_skills` | Names the guides: how a group of tools works (the timeline, animation, captions, sound, motion graphics, tracking, the camera, your brand) and how to make one kind of video well. |
| `load_skill` | Hands over one guide in full, with the tools it brings and their schemas. |
| `call_tool` | Runs any tool a guide brought in, by name. |

Your agent reads a guide before the work it covers, then calls its tools.
Each guide is also an MCP resource, `askeditor://skills/{name}`.

## Resources

| Resource | What it carries |
| - | - |
| `askeditor://projects/{project_id}/timeline` | Every clip on the timeline, with its effects and keyframe values. |
| `askeditor://projects/{project_id}/assets/{asset_id}` | The code of a motion graphic your agent wrote. |
| `askeditor://skills/{name}` | A guide, as `load_skill` returns it. |

## What every answer tells your agent

* **What changed.** Each answer names the change it made, including a clip's
animation, look and style, and the change appears live in the editor.
* **When it waits for you.** A call that costs more than a few credits, or
deletes something, answers `needs_approval`. Once you approve, the agent
calls again with the `approval_id` it was given. See
  [Connect over MCP](https://askeditor.com/docs/mcp/connect.md#approvals-and-credits).
* **When credits run short.** A paid call your balance cannot cover answers
`waiting_for_credits`: nothing ran and nothing was charged.
